Leticia Miguel: I Appreciated Unique Clinical Experiences and Mentorship

Leticia, what motivated you to pursue a medical education abroad?

The decision to pursue a medical education abroad was motivated by several factors. First off, I wanted to study at an internationally recognized university, and I knew The Czech Republic had a good medical reputation. Secondly, I knew the University prioritized small classes with  10-15 students, which meant I´d get more personalized attention from professors. With only 10-15 students per class, I knew I would have a more hands-on experience at the hospital, which was important to me. I recognized that such a system was only available outside my home country, which influenced my decision to pursue studies abroad.

After thorough research, several factors have drawn me specifically to the University of Ostrava. This approach fosters a more intimate learning environment where professors can attend to the specific needs of each student. The students get to engage with patients on a one-to-one basis, enhancing their practical learning experience

My medical education journey abroad presented with several cultural and language barriers. One significant challenge was the patient interaction at the hospital. Communicating effectively with patients was difficult as many did not speak English. Because of that, it became essential to have a basic understanding of the Czech language to talk to them. Fortunately, the university provided Czech lessons, ensuring that most students were prepared for those interactions.

Our faculty is committed to providing support to international students. In terms of accommodation, they assist international students in securing suitable housing options or accommodation at the dormitories. Language support is offered during the first 2 years of med school through Czech lessons once a week. Furthermore, the faculty organizes several events international students can attend so they can acclimate to the local environment. I think that there's only so much the university can do, so while the university can facilitate the process, the degree of adaptation depends on the individual student's mindset and level of engagement.
